北京公社创立于2004年，第一个展览开启于2005年的草场地，2006年搬至目前所在地北京798艺术区。

建立伊始，北京公社即视推动当代艺术发展与阐释为己任，以诸多艺术家的群展和个展探讨当下中国文化现状，呈现当代艺术在中国的多元地貌。多位代表性的中国当代艺术早期实践者如张晓刚、宋冬、尹秀珍、洪浩、萧昱、刘建华、海波等人都曾在这里举办过艺术中生涯极为重要的个人展览，同时，画廊也是重要艺术家的孵化器，为他们提供在中国当代艺术领域探索和构想新视野的自由。

画廊精神的核心是坚定不移地致力于展示多样化的中国当代艺术景观。这项承诺体现在其艺术家名单上，与常雨辰、胡晓媛、梁硕、梁远苇、马秋莎、尚一心、宋拓、王光乐、王鲁炎、谢墨凛、杨心广、周轶伦、葛宇路、王礼军等人的紧密合作使北京公社成为关注及扶持本土力量的先行者。

与此同时，北京公社亦将在全球语境下理解和推动当代艺术视为重要的工作议程，与国际策展人及国际艺术家的合作已陆续在画廊展开。

2018年，北京公社为著名英国艺术家、特纳奖得主理查德·迪肯，继2014 年他在英国泰特美术馆举办的大型回顾展之后，举办在中国的首次个展。这一重要里程碑体现了北京公社致力于将国际艺术带给中国观众的努力。

北京公社在2016年首届artnet年度艺术大奖上荣获“年度最佳画廊奖”。

此外，2020年的葛宇路同名个展荣获画廊周北京授予“最佳展览奖-创新奖”。
