This effort included archaeological excavations in some relics and ancient tomb clusters, leading to the unearthing and collection a significant number of cultural relics. In order to collect and study these relics, and showcase Shenzhen’s history and culture, Shenzhen Municipal Organization Committee approved the foundation of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone Museum On October 17, 1981, and renamed it as Shenzhen City Museum later. In early 2008, it was renamed to Shenzhen Museum.

The collections of Shenzhen Museum come from archaeological excavations, transfers, social donations, acquisitions, and custodianship of cultural relics. The museum presently houses a diverse collection of over 45,000 items, encompassing more than 5,700 precious cultural relics of Grade Three or higher. This collection system comprises ancient art pieces, local historical relics, physical evidence of the reform and opening-up, and natural specimens. The museum has collected over 200,000 pieces of material evidence related to the history of reform and opening-up, positioning itself at the vanguard among domestic museums. The bronze ware, ceramics, modern and contemporary calligraphy and painting, and world wildlife specimen collections are at an advanced level within the province.
In 2015, the museum concluded the initial stage of the pilot project focused on gathering material evidence of economic and social development and changes as designated by the National Cultural Heritage Administration. This effort entailed the development of collection workflows and standard guidelines, offering experience of similar work for museums in Guangdong and even nationwide. Since 2018, seizing the occasion of the preparations for Shenzhen Reform and Opening-up Exhibition Hall and Shenzhen Natural History Museum, Shenzhen Museum has intensified the acquisition of materials and artifacts related to the reform and opening-up, alongside natural specimens. These efforts have borne abundant fruit.
Shenzhen Museum features state-of-the-art facilities along with well-equipped laboratories for protection of cultural relics. These include spaces for relic protection and restoration, standard laboratories, instrument room, X-ray inspection room, cultural relics fumigation and disinfection room, etc., with a combined area of over 500 square meters. It holds a national first-level qualification for protection and design of movable cultural relics, a first-level qualification for restoration, and qualifications for replication and rubbings. The alliance serves as a national exchange and cooperation platform, leading and promoting the extension of the business scope of Chinese museums, and embodying the spirit of “Collecting today for tomorrow”.
4. Cultural Relics Survey and Archaeological Excavation
From its inception until 2004 when the archaeological team was detached from the museum, Shenzhen Museum assumed significant duties and engaged in extensive regional archaeological excavations and cultural relic surveys. Numerous sites were discovered and reported, contributing to the designation of a total of 36 major protected historical and cultural sites in three batches by the Shenzhen municipal government. It also supervised the maintenance of the historic sites such as Dapeng Fortress and Nantou Ancient Town. Shenzhen Museum organized archaeological excavations at dozens of sites including Xiantouling, Dameisha, Xiaomeisha, Hedishan, Xiangnanchun, Dieshishan, Tiezaishan, and Wubeiling. An abundance of valuable cultural relics were unearthed, which substantially sheds light on the developmental history of Shenzhen over 7000 years. These findings have provided invaluable tangible evidence for the study of local history, thoroughly substantiating that Shenzhen is far from being a historically devoid small fishing village. Among them, the site of the Wubeiling of Shang Dynasty and the Neolithic site of Xiantouling were successively evaluated and recognized as “Top ten new archaeological discoveries in China”.
5. Intangible Cultural Heritage Promotion and Protection
From January 2010 to August 2021, the Shenzhen Center for Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection was affiliated with Shenzhen Museum and organized the city-wide implementation of intangible cultural heritage protection. It investigated intangible cultural heritage resources to grasp the basic status of intangible cultural heritage throughout the city. It developed policies and regulations for intangible cultural heritage protection, led the creation of a system for intangible cultural heritage protection, and promoted the compilation of a list of representative items of intangible cultural heritage at national, provincial, municipal, and district levels. The representative items of intangible cultural heritage at city level and above increased from 39 in 2010 to 98 in 2021. Enhanced efforts were made in the exhibition and inheritance of intangible cultural heritage, resulting in significant achievements in its protection. A total of 260 events were held, including Happy Lantern Festival, Intangible Cultural Heritage Entering the Community and Schools, and Cultural Heritage Day (Cultural and Natural Heritage Day), which enriched the spiritual and cultural life of the citizens.
