MASSIMODECARLO gallery was founded in 1987. It swiftly stood out on the international artistic scene for its bold, counter-current choices: the gallery focused on lesser-known artists in Italy such as John Armleder, Olivier Mosset, and Felix Gonzalez-Torres. In the following years, the gallery program expanded to include prominent artists such as Alighiero Boetti, Cady Noland, Rudolf Stingel, Steven Parrino, Maurizio Cattelan, and Carsten Höller among others.
For over 30 years, MASSIMODECARLO has played a fundamental role in the contemporary art scene by promoting a vital dialogue between artists and national and international institutions, as well as relationships with other galleries, critics, curators and collectors.
MASSIMODECARLO works with an extraordinary variety of artists across mediums, from painting, drawing, installation, sculpture, photography, and performance to video. Over the years, the gallery’s artists have gained international recognition, showing their work in galleries, museums and biennials across the world and by accessing outstanding public and private collections.

Since 2019, Massimo De Carlo moved its Milanese headquarters to the iconic Casa Corbellini-Wassermann, in Viale Lombardia 17. Built in the early 1930’s by renowned Italian architect Piero Portaluppi, it is among Portaluppi’s most famous projects. Initially designed for domestic use, the space features exquisite details in the use of precious materials, such as various types of marbles for both the interior and exterior. It is one of the finest examples of Milanese rationalist architecture. This incredibly charged space – rooted in history and opened to the public following an extensive renovation and philological restoration curated by Studio Binocle overseen by Antonio Citterio – contributes in creating a new inspiration for the gallery artists and beyond.

MASSIMODECARLO’s new gallery space is located in 16 Clifford Street, at the heart of London’s Mayfair district. On the first floor of a Grade II Listed building built in 1723, the gallery’s new exhibition space retains largely intact, original interior features. Designed by London-based PiM.Studio Architects, this new space aspires to offer an alternative exhibition model for the contemporary art system. The gallery is present on the London scene since 2009.

Operating in Hong Kong since March 2016, MASSIMODECARLO has had a long-lasting involvement in the Asian art market. As a member of the selection committee board of Art Basel Hong Kong, the gallery strives to become part of the city’s ever-growing, bustling cultural landscape. The gallery initially opened in the Pedder Building, relocating in 2022 to the Tai Kwun complex – Center for Heritage and Arts, a historic building home to a wide variety of cultural projects.

MASSIMODECARLO画廊PIÈCE UNIQUE空间于2021年2月正式开幕，位于巴黎蒂雷纳街57号的一栋历史建筑内。该空间由日本知名建筑师隈研吾和PiM.studio Architects合作设计翻新。MASSIMODECARLO PIÈCE UNIQUE为观者提供了一个充满动感与灵活性，且每次只展出一件作品的独特空间，艺术品陈列在橱窗里，二十四小时可见。
MDC画廊接管的PIÈCE UNIQUE原本是画廊主卢西奥·阿梅利奥 (LUCIO AMELIO) 于1989年开设在巴黎的实验性空间，由赛·托姆布雷(CY TWOMBLY) 设计。MASSIMODECARLO PIÈCE UNIQUE将在尊重历史的基础上，为其注入二十一世纪的崭新活力，尝试另类的当代化展览模式。

MASSIMODECARLO Pièce Unique opened in a historical building at 57 Rue de Turenne on February 2021. It has been renovated by acclaimed Japanese architect Kengo Kuma in collaboration with PiM.studio Architects. MASSIMODECARLO Pièce Unique offers a flexible, dynamic, and upbeat program of single-work exhibitions, visible day and night through its glass window.
The gallery is born from the purchase of the “Pièce Unique” brand, an adventurous space by iconic gallerist Lucio Amelio that he opened in Paris in 1989 designed with Cy Twombly. MASSIMODECARLO Pièce Unique will respect and recast into the 21st Century the legacy of this historical project, renewing its original idea, infusing a new perspective, and offering an alternative exhibition model for the contemporary art system.
MASSIMODECARLO Pièce Unique is by statement an event-free gallery – no openings, no dinners, no VIP’s – and experiments a new balance between physical projects and digital initiatives through an innovative website and its dedicated Instagram account: @massimodecarlopieceunique.
